European Liedforum Vilnius 2013 coordinated by the Berlin University of Arts (Universität der Künste Berlin) was carried out at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre from 24th of September, 2013 to 5th of October, 2013.

During these days  Department of Piano Accompaniment (LMTA) in cooperation with the Departments of Vocal Performance and Composition, has presented this international ERASMUS Intensive Project, dedicated to the 80th Anniversary of the LMTA and Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The continuous project, coordinated by the Berlin University of Arts (Universität der Künste Berlin), was initiated and presented in 2012 in Berlin by prof. Axel Bruni, a famous pianist and promoter of contemporary music. The European Liedforum Vilnius 2013 has brought together almost 50 participants from different countries – 36 promising singers, piano accompanists and 7 composers arrived from six schools of higher musical education based in the European Union:

  • The University of Music, Drama and Media Hanover (Germany)
  • State Conservatory of Music Giuseppe Verdi in Turin (Italy)
  • The Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw (Poland)
  • The National University of Music Bucharest (Romania)
  • The Berlin University of Arts (Germany)
  • The Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre

During the 10 days of intensive work the young talents has been coached by famous performers who are teaching the subtleties of Lied at the aforementioned schools: prof. Jan Philip Schulze, prof. Eric Battaglia, prof. Maja Nosowska, prof. dr. Remus Manoleanu, prof. Axel Bauni and prof. Irena Uss – Armonienė.

The project also encompassed Lied masterclasses, creative workshops, seminars on interpretation as well as lectures and excursions. The Liedforum has been framed in two concerts of vocal chamber music written by composers from all over the world. The first concert Lied Marathon has been presented on 25th September, at the Main Hall of the LMTA; the project has been closed with the Final Concert on 4 October, at the Museum of Applied Art. During the concert all participants of the Liedforum has been performing programmes prepared during the masterclasses and consisting of works from different foreign composers. The audience also had a chance to witness world-premieres of new vocal chamber music pieces written especially for the occasion of the Liedforum by the participating students of composition.

The principal goal of the ERASMUS IP project European Liedforum Vilnius 2013 was to inspire the creation of a “unified network of European Lied“ that uses the ERASMUS international exchange programme as it's main platform for joining together departments of Lied, Vocal Performance and Accompaniment from different European institutions of higher musical education.
