Happy Birthday, Vilnius!
The Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theater congratulates Vilnius, which is celebrating its 700th birthday today, January 25!
The history of our capital is counted from the first mention of the name of Vilnius in the letter of the Grand Duke Gediminas of Lithuania in 1323 to the Christian world, i.e. for European cities. The letter was written in Latin – the lingua franca at the time – and was sent “To all the worshipers of Christ, men and women spread throughout the world”, in order to convince them that the then pagan Lithuania was not hostile to Christians and that the crusaders’ attacks were baseless.
Happy Birthday, our dear Vilnius!
