OPEN LECTURES AND WORKSHOPS BY KRZYSZTOF ZANUSSI
March 5 to 9, famous Polish film director and producer Krzysztof Zanussi conducts open lectures and workshops for students of the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre: film directors, cinematographers, actors, cinema critics, dramatists, producers.
Krzysztof Zanussi is a Polish film and theatre director, producer, scriptwriter, born in 1939. Before he went to study film in Lodz, he studied physics in Warsaw University and philosophy in Jagellonian University in Krakow. That is probably why his films often reveal an academic world – scholars contemplating the ethical values. „Quintessential hero of Zanussi’s films is a man faced with a choice between values and the temptation of their rejection. The hallmark characteristic is moral sensitivity expressed in the compromise between the sphere of dreams regarding individual freedom and a life practice restricting this freedom“, writes Halina Olczak-Moraczewska about Zanussi (Culture.pl, 2004).
Already his first films „The Structure of Crysta“ (Struktura Kryzstalu, 1969), „Family Life“ (Zycie rodzinne, 1971), „Illumination“ (Iluminacja, 1973, the main prize winner in Locarno), or „Quarter Year Bilancing“ (Bilans kwartalny, 1975 – prize in Berlin film festival) were considered as continuation of the modernistic movements of the sixties. At the same time they introduced so-called cinema of moral concern. Krzysztof Zanussi has had an impact on the next generation of polish filmmakers, especially on Krzysztof Kieslowski.
The similar tendency is observed in the films „Prootecting Colouring“ (Barwy ochronne, 1977 – the critic’s prize in Rotterdam), „The Spiral“ (Spirala, 1978) and „The Constant“ (Konstanta, 1980 – both awarded in Cannes). K. Zanussi began shooting abroad in the eighties, and his film „The Year of the Calm Sun“ (1984) from that period received the grand prix in Venice. Films from the late period are „Life As a Fatal Sexually Transmitted Disease“ (Zycie jako smiertelna choroba przenoszona droga plciowa, 2000) and „Persona non grata“ (2005).
K. Zanussi wrote two books about amateur film and is director of TOR Film Studios. In addition to filmmaking, he is also active in teaching and he has taught in a number of European film schools. Zanussi received several awards for his entire life-work, holds many Doctor Honoris Causa degrees and was conferred the French Title of the Knighthood of Art and Culture.
