CONCERTS BY THE LITHUANIAN ACADEMY OF MUSIC AND THEATRE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA AND SOLOISTS
“Continuing M. K. Čiurlionis…”

Lithuania is celebrating the 150th anniversary of the birth of the most famous Lithuanian composer and painter of the 20th century, Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis.

In honour of this outstanding artist, on the initiative of the LMTA Art Centre and the Composition Department, for the first time in the country, a project of original music creation is being realised entitled “CONTINUING M.K.ČIURLIONIS: THEORICAL-PRACTICAL STUDY OF MUSICAL STYLE COMPONAVIMO AND ARTISTIC DISSEMINATION”. The project has several parts: a competition of stylisations and recompositions “Continuing M.K. Čiurlionis”, concerts of the winning works in Lithuanian cities and gala concerts dedicated to the year of M.K. Čiurlionis on April 12, 2025 at the Širvintos Culture Centre and on April 13, 2025 at the Lithuanian National Philharmonic.
The concert will feature the premiere of a concerto for piano and symphony orchestra commissioned for composer Lukas Butkus by the Jury of the Continuing M.K. Čiurlionis Competition. The young composer has chosen an interesting approach to the composition of the idea of the work – it is a 12-movement work for piano and symphony orchestra Zodiac, based on the cycle of paintings of the same name by M. K. Čiurlionis and the famous Fugue in B flat minor.

The concert will also include works by M. K. Čiurlionis arranged by the composer Jievaras Jasinskis – two Nocturnes, M. K. Čiurlionis’ symphonic poem “The Sea” and the first part of the Concerto for Flute and Symphony Orchestra by M. K. Čiurlionis’ composition teacher Karl Reineke.
