Jan Schumacher (*1980) has been University Music Director and Honorary Professor at Goethe University in Frankfurt/Main since 2015. Additionally, since 2024, he has been the Artistic Director of the Frankfurter Singakademie and, since 1999, the conductor of the Camerata Musica Limburg.

With his ensembles, he explores a wide range of repertoire, from Gregorian chant to world premieres and jazz, from symphonic orchestras to big band, as well as vocal and electronic improvisation. Regular recordings for HR, SWR, ORF, RTÉ, EBU, and Deutschlandradio, along with numerous CD productions, document his work. Camerata Musica Limburg is also a first-prize winner of prestigious national and international competitions and a guest at major music festivals.

After studying music education in Mainz, Jan studied conducting with Wolfgang Schäfer in Frankfurt. From a young age, he was shaped by the fascination of making music together, which he experienced as a child and adolescent (musical training with the Limburger Domsingknaben and in the Rheinland-Pfalz State Youth Choir). This continues to drive his diverse activities until today. Between 2009 and 2025, Jan taught as a lecturer, instructor, and professor at various universities. His extensive teaching experience led to the publication „Dirigieren. Proben. Singen“ by Carus Verlag. Additionally, Jan has edited 20 choral collections with major choral music publishers (Bärenreiter, Carus, Helbling, OUP, Peters).

Jan is a sought-after guest conductor, juror and seminar leader for choirs, orchestras, and conductors both nationally and internationally. Invitations lead him to many European countries, Argentina, Panama, Venezuela, USA, Turkey, Lebanon, Iran, Indonesia, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, China and The Philippines.

For many years, Jan was a member of the board and music commission of the European Choral Association – Europa Cantat. Since 2019, he has been the chair of the Choral Advisory Board of the German Music Council, making him the artistic director and jury chair of the German Choral Competition. Since 2020, he has also been one of the vice-presidents of the International Federation for Choral Music (IFCM). Jan is appointed jury-president for three editions of the prestigious International Chamber Choir Competition in Marktoberdorf, starting in 2027.
