GUEST FROM ITALY: GIOVANNI MAZZARINO’S WORKSHOP “INVENZIONI NON INVENTATE”

The aim of this masterclass is to introduce the principles of jazz ensemble arrangement. During the class, Giovanni Mazzarino will discuss the principles of composition in the language of jazz, analyzing both rhythm and harmony.

Giovanni Mazzarino is one of the most prominent contemporary Italian jazz pianists, composers, and educators, whose creative career spans more than four decades. Recognized for his exceptional lyricism and profound harmonic language, he was named the best Italian jazz talent in 2002 (Musica Jazz) and later established himself among the country’s most technically proficient pianists. His discography includes over 15 albums of his own compositions, recorded alongside jazz legends such as Steve Swallow, Tom Harrell, and Randy Brecker.

In addition to his active concert career, G. Mazzarino is a respected jazz educator, teaching at the conservatories of Messina, Cosenza, and Udine. His international teaching experience extends to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he led masterclasses in jazz improvisation. The pianist is also the author of several theoretical works on jazz harmony and the founder of the label “Jazzy Records,” actively contributing to the preservation and dissemination of jazz traditions.
