David Geringas

Doctor of Honour at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre.

David Geringas was awarded the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa in 2008.

A Lithuanian and German cellist, teacher, conductor, winner of the Lithuanian National Prize for Culture and Arts (2002).

David Geringas was born in Vilnius on 20 July 1946. He studied cello at Michailas Šenderovas‘ classes in the National M. K. Čiurlionis School of Art. In 1968, completed studies at the Moscow Conservatory of Music with Mstislav Rostropovitch. In 1970, he won the First Prize and Gold Medal at the International Tchaikovsky Competition held in Moscow. In 1970-1975, he was the soloist of the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra. In 1975, emigrated to Germany but since 1992, after Lithuania regained independence, has frequently performed in Lithuania and been an eager promoter of the Lithuanian music.
