Performance-experiment “Vegetation”

Performed in Lithuanian

Director: Miglė Remeikaitė
Cast: Kamilė Galkutė, Tomas Šečkus
Composer: Gytis Karapkevičius
Set designer: Oles Makukhin

Before starting this experiment we asked ourselves a few questions: How do people differ from plants? What would music composed by a plant sound like? What if a plant, not human, controlled the lights on stage? And what if a tree, say some birch, tried to tell a story, what would that sound like?

Unfortunately, we did not get exact answers. Because plants neither compose music, control lighting nor tell stories. However, we have figured out the difference between plants and humans by exploring the works of playwright Manuela Infante, forester Peter Wohlleben and plant neurobiologist Stefan Mancus.

Lead by light, crucial for photosynthesis, unlimited growth and other differences we tried to create music, control stage lighting and tell a human story guided by the principles of plant existence. And when the experiment got its momentum, we began to understand that some of the differences are becoming advantages.

Now we invite You to the final stage of this experiment, where together we will try to answer the question: To what extent can we be others? Maybe we and the others are actually the same?

Maybe in five hundred years the world will be just a green ball, pure vegetation, like the Garden of Eden?
