THE HUNGRY PULCINELLA
An imaginative collage from the Commedia dell’arte tradition, with texts by Gianni Rodari and Eduardo Scarpetta, musics by Niccolò Jommelli and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Imagine being in a square in front of a royal palace. There is a big fair in the square. The eternally hungry Pulcinella hopes to find something to eat by attracting people’s attention with his imaginative offerings. Suddenly, we can hear music coming from the windows of the royal palace, and we imagine ourselves watching a music theatre performance during the evening celebration for the birth of the princess. The story sang by the singer seems tragic: the hero is about to lose his life; he sings his desperate farewell to his beloved, and to the world. However, Pulcinella is experiencing his own daily tragedy as well, as he hasn’t found anything to eat yet! So, he begins to beg passers-by for food, and in a sort of delirium, he starts talking to his old friend Carmela, asking her to cook him some maccheroni. But his hunger is too strong, and he faints. Pulcinella remains on the ground while a second piece of music is singing– this second performance narrates the same story as the first one, but the music is different, as it seems to have been written in another place and at another moment in history. Afterall, Pulcinella is eternal and lives in every moment and in every place… At the end of the party, some artists bring food for the poor who beg outside the royal palace. Pulcinella notices that someone has brought food. He wakes up, happily approaches the food and thanks heaven.
