SOUNDING THE SILENT FILM: MASTERCLASSES BY LEGENDARY PROFESSOR GÜNTER A. BUCHWALD AND SCREENINGS OF THE SERIES “FANTOMAS” (1913–1914) WITH LIVE SOUNDTRACK

The early cinema festival “Pirmoji banga” and the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre present an exclusive event for aspiring music professionals and avid cinephiles – a masterclass for Music Faculty students with legendary silent film accompanist, composer, conductor, and professor Günter A. Buchwald, and a screening of French silent film director Louis Feuillade’s series “Phantom” (1913–1914) with live sound.

Students of the LMTA Music Faculty studying composition, piano, jazz, chamber and contemporary music will have the opportunity to meet and work with the legendary silent film accompanist, German professor Günter A. Buchwald, considered one of the main standard-bearers of the silent film renaissance – since 1978, he has provided live accompaniment for more than 3,500 silent film screenings around the world.

During the masterclasses, selected LMTA students will learn the basics of silent film accompaniment and get to know the behind-the-scenes of this rare profession. The masterclass will conclude with a live performance, providing the soundtrack for a special screening organized by the early cinema festival Pirmoji banga (First Wave) – five parts of the series Phantom by French silent film director Louis Feuillade (1913–1914): Phantom: In the Shadow of the Guillotine, Phantom vs. Juvet, Phantom: The Dead Man Who Kills, Phantom vs. Phantom, and The Deceptive Corpse. This will be the first screening of this silent film series in Lithuania.
