Frieda Frost (PhD student and lecturer at the University of Cologne, Department of Arts and Music. Germany/Morocco)
Presentation “Borrowed Steps and the Flow of Movement. Transnational flows and cultural influences in breakdancing”
Dancers use the body to tell stories from the past, giving insight into the heritage of the practice and its origins. The cultural heritage of breakdance becomes visible through the movements in improvisation in the circle and in the dance battles, mediated and transmitted from one dancer to another. But what cultural and historical references can be traced in breakdance movements? How can they migrate within the global breakdancing community? And how can the practical knowledge of breakdancers’ performance of breakdancing movements enrich academic research? Frieda Frost introduces her PhD research project on breakdance, breakdancing and its cultural heritage.
11:10-11:40
Airida Gudaitė (Doctoral student in Theatre and Film, Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre)
Presentation “Transformation of Hip Hop Dance as an Art Practice in Urban Contexts”
The presentation looks at the transformation of hip hop dance as an art practice in urban contexts from the point of view of contemporary art viewers and practitioners, looking back to the origins of hip hop dance, bringing street dance back to urban neighbourhoods, spaces that are far away from the city centre. Based on the case of the “City as a Body – Courtyard Games” celebration in the Justiniškės district, the paper presents an analysis of the perspective of the dancers who have gone out into the spaces of the apartment district, the social dynamics of the spaces in relation to the dancer’s corporeal and emotional experience.
