YUKIO MISHIMA “HANJO“ | PREMIER
“What if all life were spent waiting?” – is the question Hanako asks herself and the audience.
“Hanjo is a play by playwright and one of the most important Japanese novelists of the 20th century, Yukio Mishima.
“Hanjo is based on Zeami’s Noh theatre drama, based on the story of Ban Jieyu (Hanjo) in the Han dynasty: initially the emperor’s beloved wife, who is soon abandoned after her husband’s infatuation with a servant. The former empress writes a poem in which she likens herself to a summer fan that is put aside in autumn.
The 20th century. In the adaptation of the play, Mishima introduces the mad geisha Hanako, who waits for her lover and serves the painter Gitsuko as a muse.
Hanjo intertwines themes of love and obsession, dissolves the boundaries between illusion and reality, explores the phenomenon of time and the beauty of unattainable ideas.
