Recomposition and Stylization Competition “Continuing M. K. Čiurlionis”
About the project
The project “Continuing M. K. Čiurlionis” aimed to bring the work of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis into the context of contemporary music. During the project, Čiurlionis’ scores, sketches, and manuscripts were selected and digitised, forming the foundation for a recomposition and stylization competition.
A total of 22 new compositions were submitted to the competition. From these, a professional jury selected 12 works for the final concert. The concert featured exceptionally diverse ensembles: pieces for 6 pianos, 8 accordions and birbynė, 4 saxophones and electronics, 4 voices, 2 pianos, string orchestra and electronics, organ, and more. In total, 12 premieres were presented, performed by 36 LMTA soloists and the Lithuanian National Philharmonic ensemble Musica humana.
After the concert, the laureates were announced and prizes awarded.
The project was initiated by the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre and funded by the Lithuanian Council for Culture. Prizes were established by the M. K. Čiurlionis House, the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society, and the Lithuanian Music Information Centre. The project offered young creators a unique opportunity to explore Čiurlionis’ work anew through experimentation and contemporary interpretation.
