Health Insurance

Health Insurance in Lithuania

All international students must have valid health insurance for the entire study period in Lithuania. The type of insurance you need depends on your country of origin.

EU / EEA / Swiss students

Students from EU/EEA countries should bring a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or an equivalent document (e.g. S1 form).

With the EHIC you can receive medically necessary treatment in Lithuania under the same conditions as local residents.

Health services are provided only in medical institutions that have contracts with the Territorial Health Insurance Fund (THIF) (Teritorinė ligonių kasa).

Before your visit, make sure that your chosen clinic or hospital is part of this network.

Non-EU / Non-EEA students

Students from outside the EU or EEA must obtain private health insurance covering:

  • medical treatment in case of illness or accident,

  • emergency hospitalisation,

  • medical repatriation (return to home country).

This insurance must be valid in Lithuania and cover the entire study period.

Proof of valid health insurance is required when applying for a national visa (D) or a temporary residence permit.

If you already have international insurance, check that it is accepted in Lithuania. Otherwise, you can purchase a local policy from Lithuanian companies such as Lietuvos draudimas, ERGO, or others.

Lithuanian Compulsory Health Insurance (PSD / CHI)

Foreign students are not automatically covered by Lithuania’s compulsory health insurance system (PSD).

You may become eligible only if:

  • you have a permanent residence permit in Lithuania, or

  • you are legally employed and your employer pays monthly PSD contributions.

Otherwise, you must rely on private health insurance.

In case of emergency

In case of a serious accident or sudden illness, call the European emergency number 112 (operators speak English).

Emergency medical assistance is guaranteed to everyone, but follow-up care will depend on your insurance coverage.

  2. Keep a printed and digital copy of your insurance policy and contact details of your insurance provider.

  3. Register with a local medical institution that accepts your insurance (recommended for long-term stays).
