Main activities
The LMTA Department of History and Theory of Art was established in 1991. The Department offers three-cycle studies: Bachelor’s arts studies, Master’s studies in humanities, and PhD studies in humanities and arts studies.
The Department of History and Theory of Art employs well-known theatre and film researchers and critics. Some of the teachers also work as researchers at other institutions (the Lithuanian Culture Research Institute, the Institute of Lithuanian Literature and Folklore) and their scientific qualification and efficiency are a significant contribution to the scientific potential of the LMTA.
The teachers of the department are actively involved in critical, scientific, expert and educational activities in Lithuania and abroad; they participate in international conferences and publish scientific and critical articles.
The graduates of the Department work in various Lithuanian cultural institutions such as the Lithuanian National Drama Theatre, the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre, the Lithuanian State Youth Theatre, the OKT / Vilnius City Theatre and the Lithuanian Dance Information Centre. They also work in periodical publishing offices and teach at the Academy.
Annually, the Department organizes two international scientific conferences, for theatrology students and for theatre researchers. It is also an initiator and participant of a variety of arts and research projects.
