The Competition for Lithuanian Chamber Music Performance owes its origins to the Lithuanian Chamber Music Competition organised in 1999 to commemorate the 80th birthday of Prof. Eduardas Balsys, composer and long-time head of the Department of Composition at the then State Conservatoire (now the LMTA). The aims of the competition are to promote chamber music by Lithuanian composers and encourage the professional development of the members of chamber ensembles.
The first three competitions took place every second year, but since 2003 the competition has been held on an annual basis. The 2012 edition became an international event. Every year, the competition is dedicated to commemorating the birthday of an outstanding chamber music performer, educator or major chamber music event.
Studies of chamber music by Lithuanian composers, performances of rarely played chamber music works and the appearance of new works are areas inspired by the competition. The event brings to light prospective LMTA chamber ensembles and chamber music performers.
The Kaunas String Quartet (1st place in 2005), the trio Claviola (1st place in 2008) and the string quartets Adora (1st place in 2010) and Mettis (1st place in 2012) see this competition as the start of their distinguished careers. The duo Presto (2013), Trip Trio (2014), the duet of Konradas Levickis (violin) and Lauryna Lankutytė (piano, 2015), the duet of Lora Kmieliauskaitė (violin) and Arnas Kmieliauskas (cello, 2016), the piano trios Modo (2017) and Meta (2018, in the photo above), and the duet of Vincas Bačius (double bass) and Jonas Šopa (piano, 2019) were the first-prize laureates at recent competitions.
