The National Film School (KIMO) is the fourth branch of the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre dedicated to the training of highly qualified film professionals. It is the main and only higher education institution in Lithuania that trains filmmakers. The Department of Film and Television, which has existed at the Academy for more than 30 years, has been reorganised into an independent department since autumn of 2024. KIMO (LMTA) has produced a large number of graduates – artists and professionals, who today are celebrating Lithuania in the international cinema space and at the same time shaping the national cinema trends, as well as a strong and united national film community.
The National Film School (KIMO) of the LMTA currently offers 7 specialisations: video directing, cinematography, sound design, dramaturgy, editing, production and film culture. Masters (postgraduate) students can choose one general field – the art of cinema – by specialising in video direction, cinematography, production or sound design, while delving into the nuances of artistic research. Admission is every two years – in even years. Currently, more than 120 students study at KIMO. There is also a PhD programme in film studies.
LMTA is a member of CILECT, the international association of higher film schools, and an active partner of FILMEU, Europe’s only alliance of film universities. Academy founded and coordinates NORDFILM, a network of 11 major film schools in the Baltic and North Sea regions. From next year, LMTA will become a full member of the DOCNOMADS joint master programme, together with Portuguese and Belgian universities. KIMO’s students actively participate in international events and dominate Lithuanian film awards and festivals. “Sidabrinė gervės” awards adorn the shelf of many a graduate or young talent still studying.
From 2 September 2024, KIMO has started to operate in its new home – the yellow building (cube) of the LMTA Study Campus, Olandų st. 21A. The school’s studios and facilities meet the high demands of contemporary filmmaking and production. The two newly built and equipped pavilions for the production of films meet all the requirements for sound insulation and electrical wiring, and are equipped for the use of water, smoke and other special effects during filming. The new facilities include 7 individual audiovisual editing rooms, an editing classroom with 8 video editing systems, an audio recording studio and a sound room with DOLBY ATMOS capability. The school has screening rooms and modular classrooms for practical and theoretical work, student lounges and group and individual work areas, a scenery warehouse and a large cinema hall with a capacity of over 100 people.
KIMO employs more than 50 film artists, professionals and specialists, actively working and creating both in Lithuania and worldwide.
