National Film School (KIMO) – a division of LMTA for training top-tier film professionals. KIMO is dedicated to the education of highly qualified film professionals. It is the primary and only higher education institution in Lithuania that trains film creators. After more than three decades of operation, the Department of Film and Television was reorganized in 2024 into an independent division – an academic school with faculty status.
Over the years, KIMO has nurtured numerous graduates – artists and professionals who now represent Lithuania on the international film scene, shape national film trends, and contribute to a strong and united national film community.
KIMO study programmes
- Film Arts (BA) – specialisations: Screenwriting, Sound Design, Film Culture Studies, Editing, Producing, Cinematography, Directing.
- Film Arts (MA) – specialisations: Sound Design, Producing, Cinematography, Directing.
- Doctoral Studies (DA) in Theatre and Film Arts
Students specializing in film arts are admitted every two years. Throughout their studies, they deepen their knowledge of film history, analyze the nuances of cinematic language, explore the specifics of documentary and fiction filmmaking, and refine their professional skills while developing their unique creative style. Many practical assignments are completed in creative teams. During their studies, students take on the production of their own creative projects, collaborating with the KIMO Film Studio. They have access to all necessary equipment and facilities, including filming, lighting, and sound recording equipment, video and audio editing suites, recording studios, a sound mixing hall, a color correction lab, two film studios, several smaller screening rooms, and a modern cinema hall equipped with 4K projection and a Dolby sound system.
Each year, KIMO students and their films participate in prestigious international festivals such as the Cannes Short Film Corner, Berlinale Talents, Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival, Karlovy Vary IFF, San Sebastian, IDFA, Kino Pavasaris, Scanorama, Vilnius Short Film Festival, and many others.
KIMO Students and Faculty
The KIMO community currently consists of 137 students and 36 faculty members, including 3 professors, 17 associate professors, 15 lecturers, and technical staff. Each semester, KIMO welcomes visiting professors and film professionals from around the world.
The Lithuanian National Film School KIMO has been a member of the European University Alliance FILMEU since 2023. Additionally, KIMO coordinates the Nordplus programme’s NORDFILM network, organizing annual interinstitutional workshops, training sessions, and the NORD CREATIVE CAMP summer workshops for students from partner schools. LMTA is also a member of the global film school network CILECT and the European film school network GEECT. In collaboration with partner schools from Belgium (LUCA), Portugal (LUSOFONA), and Ireland (IADT), KIMO offers two joint master’s degree programme:
- DOCNOMADSplus – Documentary Filmmaking
