LMTA Theatre and Dance Faculty trains highly skilled specialists in theatre, dance, art history and theory, and arts management. The faculty was established in 1991 and initially drama theatre actors were trained there. However, over several decades it has developed into the main centre in Lithuania for the education of professionals of stage and related professions.
The faculty consists of four departments: Acting and Directing, Dance and Movement, History and Theory of Art, and Arts Management. Around 200 students are studying at the faculty and about 100 teachers work there – leading specialists with the highest national and international awards who take an active part in the processes of the contemporary arts as well as in the search for new pedagogical methods.
All of the faculty’s units maintain close cultural and artistic relations with professional institutions in relevant fields and take an active role in the activities of profiled international networks, such as Nordplius, E:UTSA (Europe: Union of Theatre Schools and Academies), EdE (École des Écoles) and ENCATC (European Network on Cultural Management and Policy). The faculty constantly arranges lectures delivered by actors, playwrights and directors from abroad, and international workshops, masterclasses and projects are also held there.
Theatre and Dance Faculty organises various events: a dance festival Shok akademija; an annual theatre festival organised together with the LMTA Art Centre to celebrate World Theatre Day; and the individual works competition Balkono okupacija (Occupying the Balcony).
The faculty contains a Theatre Hall, Dance Hall, Balcony Theatre. Theatre Hall and Balcony Theatre holds student performances, competitions of individual works, festivals of minor dramaturgy and contemporary stage art festivals, etc.
