The Department of String Instruments at LMTA traces its origins back to 1933. It serves as a unique environment for the education and development of string musicians, providing an exceptional place for students to study and achieve their artistic goals. Studying at LMTA opens broad career opportunities both in Lithuania and internationally. The academy’s graduates are respected and valued artists, successfully establishing themselves in the music world, working in prestigious institutions and organizations, or pursuing independent projects.
Study Programmes
The Department of String Instruments offers two Music Performance programmes covering both practical and theoretical aspects of string instrument artistry. The department provides specializations in: Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Harp and Guitar.
Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance (String Instruments) – BA. Duration: 4 years
The undergraduate programme focuses on building a concert repertoire and gaining performance experience to prepare students for a professional music career. The curriculum enhances students’ ability to critically evaluate their artistic performance while developing technical and interpretational skills necessary for different musical styles.
Master’s Degree in Music Performance (String Instruments) – MA. Duration: 2 years
The master’s programme allows students to deepen their musical abilities and expand their concert repertoire. Students gain more performance experience, learn to analyze their creative process, and develop essential planning and rehearsal skills for concert preparation. This programme provides the necessary tools for professional artistic growth and self-improvement.

LMTA Symphony Orchestra
The orchestra training at LMTA is an essential part of the String Instruments programme. The LMTA Symphony Orchestra, established in 1953, is the second-oldest symphony orchestra in Lithuania.
Key features:
- Two orchestra sessions annually where students from the String, Wind, and Percussion ) Departments prepare new programmess and enhance their ensemble performance skills.
2) Solo performance opportunities – select students perform as soloists with the orchestra, gaining invaluable experience in a professional concert setting.
3) Conducted by Assoc. Prof. Martynas Staškus (since 2013), with guest conductors from Lithuania and abroad.
This unique experience allows young musicians to showcase their solo abilities, gain stage confidence, and develop an understanding of orchestral dynamics.
Collaboration & International Projects
LMTA is a hub for concerts, performances, and cultural events, offering students opportunities to participate in international projects, competitions, and festivals. The department is actively involved in Erasmus and Nordplus exchange programs.
Masterclasses
Each year, the department hosts masterclasses with renowned guest professors and performers, including: Yuri Bashmet, Boris Brovtsyn, David Geringas, Nikita Boriso-Glebsky, Nobuko Imai, Yo-Yo Ma, Mstislav Rostropovich, Dmitry Sitkovetsky.
International Youth Orchestras
Selected students participate in prestigious youth orchestra programs, including:
- Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra (GMJO)
- European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO)
- Baltic Youth Philharmonic

Competitions & Festivals
The Department of String Instruments is one of the organizers of the International Jascha Heifetz Violin Competition, with Prof. Rūta Lipinaitytė as the artistic director. The department also hosts:

- The Baltic Strings International Competition
- Annual competitions honoring Lithuania’s greatest string musicians
