Andrew Bentley, PhD, has been named by invitation as Artistic Professor of Music Technology at the Sibelius Academy, University of the Arts Helsinki. The professorship is a fixed-term post for a period of five years, commencing on 1 August 2015. Established through additional funding by the University of the Arts, the professorship is the first of its kind in Finland.
As Professor, Dr Bentley will be responsible for the development of artistic and doctoral education in Music Technology, as well as for the implementation of the newest development and research data into teaching and artistic activity. The new professorship has been established in order to reinforce a field of study that has been deemed strategically important.
- I hope that in a few years’ time we will see a more versatile crop of livelihoods in Finland that stem from Music Technology. Luckily, our students are enthusiastic and enterprising. One of my aims is to diversify the doctoral research field in Music Technology, for example by attracting doctoral students interested in R&D in sound engineering, Bentley summarises.
British-born Andrew Bentley (b. 1952) has elevated electro-acoustic music expertise in Finland to an international level since the 1980s, first at the Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE and the University of Helsinki, then later at the Sibelius Academy, where he has worked since the 1990s. He was one of the founders of the Music Technology study programme at the Sibelius Academy in 1998, and acted as its first Head. Bentley has made long-term efforts to develop electro-acoustic music teaching and its educational tools, increasing their levels significantly. Over the past few years he has been actively involved in the development of SAMA – Sound Art & Sonic Arts, the inter-academy study programme at the University of the Arts Helsinki. Graduating in 1981, Bentley holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree from York University. He has occupied the post of interim Professor of Music Technology at the Sibelius Academy since 1 August 2014.
Dr Bentley was named Professor by interim Rector of the University of the Arts Helsinki Paula Tuovinen, by proposal of the Dean of the Sibelius Academy.
