Doctoral students in the humanities explore the evolution of various art forms, including music, theatre, and film. They engage with historical and contemporary artistic movements, theoretical perspectives, and interdisciplinary approaches to art criticism. Emphasis is placed on research methodologies in the humanities, enabling students to critically analyze artistic phenomena in both local and global contexts. The doctoral study programme in the field of History and Theory of Art enables students to continue studies and pursue career as a researcher at LMTA.

The Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre offers artistic doctorate studies in Music or Theatre and Film:
- Music (permission to conduct the studies was granted on 21 June 2011);
- Theatre and Film (permission to conduct the studies was granted on 29 June 2012).
The aim of the artistic doctorate studies in the arts is to train artists-researchers who are able to combine high-level artistic work and research in their creative activities; who will enrich the selected artistic field with valuable insights and new knowledge by leaning on their artistic maturity; and who can participate in the dissemination of art.
The LMTA artistic doctorate programmes consist of studies, the development of an artistic research project containing two parts of equal value – research and creative – and the public presentation of this project (defence).
The scope of the LMTA Doctoral studies is 240 credits. The credits are distributed in the following manner:
- Subjects (5 classes) – 56 credits;
- Creative part (specialisation) – 92 credits;
- Preparation of Thesis – 92 credits.
The Art Doctoral studies have a total duration of four years. Theory-based lectures and evaluations take place in Year 1 and Year 2.
The Doctoral studies are concluded with the defence of the Artistic Research Project.
The end date for the LMTA Doctoral studies is 31 August.
